Shah Rukh Khan, one of the world’s most celebrated film stars, made his much-anticipated debut at the Met Gala in New York, embracing the event’s theme with a custom look by Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Despite his global fame, Khan was met with curiosity from some members of the international press, who asked him to introduce himself on the red carpet. Khan responded simply, “I’m Shah Rukh,” before explaining his outfit and designer.
Khan wore a dramatic floor-length coat crafted from Tasmanian superfine wool, featuring monogrammed Japanese horn buttons. The single-breasted coat, with its peak collar and wide lapels, was paired with a black crepe de chine silk shirt, tailored wool trousers, and a pleated satin kamarbandh at the waist. The look was completed with layered gold chains, a bold ‘K’ pendant referencing his ‘King Khan’ moniker, and a Bengal Tiger Head Cane in 18k gold set with gemstones.
This year’s Met Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” explored the evolution of Black fashion and its cultural impact. Sabyasachi’s design for Khan referenced the historical narratives of Black and Indian dandyism, blending classic menswear with maximalist Indian flourishes. Khan stated that he requested the look be in black or white, preferring comfort above all.
Although Khan’s presence led to crowds gathering outside his hotel, the moment on the red carpet when he was asked “Who are you?” highlighted the sometimes surprising gaps in global celebrity recognition. Sabyasachi and event hosts later emphasised Khan’s iconic status, noting his influence and the significance of his Met Gala debut as the first Indian male Bollywood star to walk the event’s red carpet.
Khan admitted to feeling nervous, describing himself as shy and not often attending such events, but said he was motivated to impress his children and showcase Indian talent on a global stage. His appearance was widely celebrated as a fusion of Indian and international style, marking a memorable moment at one of fashion’s most prestigious gatherings.
